How Water Hardness Is Measured and Classified
Water hardness measures dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals, expressed in milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate equivalent (mg/L CaCO3) or in grains per gallon (GPG). One grain per gallon equals 17.1 mg/L. Consumer Confidence Reports published by utilities use both units.

The pattern is clear: Raleigh, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro, and High Point all fall in the soft range. Hickory diverges dramatically at 215 mg/L. For residents of the Triangle, Triad, or greater Charlotte served by these utilities, hardness scale damage on water heaters and fixtures is not the primary water quality concern. Why Source Water Type Explains Most of the Variation
The dominant driver of hardness in public water systems is whether the source is surface water or groundwater.
Surface water reservoirs (lakes formed by dams on rivers) collect rainfall and runoff from forested watersheds. Rainwater itself is soft: it carries almost no dissolved minerals when it falls. As it moves across forest soil and into streams, it picks up small amounts of calcium and magnesium from soil weathering, but contact time is short and the volumes are large. The result is naturally low-mineral water. Falls Lake (Raleigh), Jordan Lake (Triangle communities), Lake Norman and Mountain Island Lake (Charlotte), Lake Keowee (Greenville SC), and Lake Murray (Columbia SC) are all surface reservoirs, which is why every utility drawing from them reports soft water.
Groundwater works differently. Water that percolates through soil and rock over months or years dissolves minerals continuously. In NC's Piedmont granite belt, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, uranium, and radium all leach into groundwater at concentrations far above what surface reservoirs carry. A private well in eastern Wake County drawing from granite fractures will routinely test at 10 to 18 GPG, even though Raleigh Water reports 1.6 GPG at the tap.
Hickory NC: Why the Catawba River Runs Harder at Its Headwaters
Hickory's 215 mg/L (13 GPG) reading requires an explanation, because Charlotte also draws from the Catawba River system and reports only 34 mg/L.
The difference is geography and reservoir dynamics. Lake Hickory sits on the upper Catawba in the foothills transition zone between the Blue Ridge and the Piedmont. The watershed geology in that stretch includes crystalline rock formations with higher calcium and magnesium content than the lower Piedmont reservoirs. Lake Norman, which Charlotte's water treatment plants use, is roughly 85 miles downstream, a much larger reservoir with greater dilution capacity and a watershed that has already had the heavier minerals stripped by distance and settling.
This matters for Hickory homeowners. At 215 mg/L, water heaters accumulate scale measurably within the first year of operation. Dishwashers and coffee machines clog faster. Soap and shampoo require significantly more product to lather. A water softener sized for very hard water (typically 64,000 to 80,000 grain capacity for a standard home) is not a luxury in Hickory, it is a practical investment in appliance lifespan and operating cost. What This Means If You Are on a Private Well
Utility data does not apply to private wells. If you are on a well anywhere in NC's Piedmont, the geology means your hardness can range from 5 GPG in a shallow sandy-soil well to over 25 GPG in a deep fractured granite well. There is no public reporting requirement for private wells, and hardness varies by well depth, casing condition, and local rock type. What Hardness Level Requires Treatment?
There is no hard regulatory cutoff because hardness is not a health-based standard. The practical threshold most treatment professionals use:
- Below 60 mg/L (under 3.5 GPG): Little visible scale; soap lather is normal; no treatment needed for hardness specifically. Softener is not indicated unless other water quality concerns (iron, pH, PFAS) are present.
- 61 to 120 mg/L (3.5 to 7 GPG): Visible scale on faucets and in the water heater over time; some soap interference. A softener extends appliance lifespan and reduces cleaning effort but is an economic decision rather than an urgent one.
- Above 120 mg/L (above 7 GPG): Scale accumulates rapidly; water heater efficiency and lifespan are measurably reduced; dishwasher and coffee machine performance degrades.
